Yes! It is true. As per the news of Malwarebytes, A drive-by
cryptomining campaign is increasingly troubling millions of Android users. It
is a link campaign that brings users to specific websites in order to get
access to their mobile devices. The aim of this campaign is to earn
cryptocurrency by using people’s mobile phones. And the fact that people don’t
use security applications or web filtering on their mobile devices is making
the things worse.
The process uses malicious advertisements that are shown to
users just like standard ads. But, these contain a Trojan that hijacks a user’s
mobile phone without their knowledge. After the ad is clicked by the user, the
code starts running and mine for the cryptocurrency by using the phone’s
processor.
Then the scheme demands a captcha code that is exactly same
(w3FaSO5R) for everyone. And until the code is entered and continue button is
clicked, the device mine Monero at high speed maxing out the device’s
processor. The code makes use of full power of the device for making money for
the creators of malware.
While the people behind this malware are said to be making
just a couple of thousand dollars for each month, the value of Monero is
expected to increase exponentially sooner in the future because of the fluctuating
nature of the crypto market. While the market is as of now in a droop, numerous
cryptocurrencies are beginning to bounce back, there’s a probability that
Monero will see continued gains that will make this malware justified, despite
all the trouble.
